Wuxi 无锡 Industrial Visit :: Day 1

The Wuxi Industrial Visit was organized by the 2nd batch of NOC Shanghai students (formerly known also as SHEN 2) and it was meant to be an educational experience and a bonding session between the 2 batches, 2nd and 3rd.

The visit, as I remembered it, was awful. Not to say that Wuxi was not a nice place, but I simply did not have any fond memories of the place.

The visit started off well, with a visit to the Wuxi Industrial Park, which was a joint venture of SembCorp with the local government. The park was well ran, but trailed behind in terms of revenue and publicity to the Suzhou Industrial Park, which was another joint venture between Singapore and the local government in Suzhou. Both parks took many years to eventually break even and was only able to do so after a shift in majority share to the local government. A mistake, who can tell?

We visited a Singaporean ran factory at the park dealing in plastic injection molding and toured the facility.

This was the entire group (comprising of NOC students and FUSSA students) at the Wuxi Industrial Park.

After the visit, we had lunch at a terribly unsatisfactory place.

Without hanging around too long at lunch, we quickly went on to the next thing on our itinerary – 梅园 Plum Blossom Garden. The flowers were beautiful as were the wondrous scent that lingered in the air.

Next we went to the Song family residence. (I hope I remember correctly!)

We, finally, after a day’s worth of touring around checked into our hotel. It was an absolutely crummy hotel. It was supposedly 3 stars, but I find even giving it a single star ridiculous.

Stay here at your own risk. The bed was dirty, with stains and hair on it. The corridor stank of the toilet. The place was dark and gross!

I could not wait to get out of the hotel.

We then went in search of the city centre, to look for dinner.

We ended up in this little eatery, which was very packed. Food was not too bad. After dinner, we splitted into a few groups, some went shopping, some went to sing K, I went with mq and hj to an arcade, where I lost all my tokens in a quick 15 mins and subsequently watched as mq and hj played on. Gosh! I suck at computer games!

Went over to a coffee house and sat there chit chatting and drinking coffee, till the rest of the people all turned up after their sing song session. It was chat till late before heading back to the awful little hotel.
