Inner Mongolia (Day 1) :: Hohhot 呼和浩特

Mention Inner Mongolia and visions of vast, endless grasslands appear in my mind. Riding on a sturdy stallion, racing among over the plains towards the distant horizon. With the sun shining down on the green earth and the cool breeze caressing my face, it was peace and excitement all at once.

The trip to Inner Mongolia 内蒙古 and Shanxi 山西 was the most memorable and enjoyable to date.I left Da Jia Yuan with 5 other people (Min Chuan, Yvonne, Chin Keong, Shuhui, Jean) and headed for Hong Qiao Airport at 5 pm. Met up with the rest of the people going (24 people in total, 2 more people were meeting us at Inner Mongolia itself as they were coming in from Beijing.)

e landed in Hohhot (呼和浩特), Inner Mongolia at 2225 hours and the trip begins. Our tour guide (Gao Xia) along with the Boss of the tour agency (李总) had come to pick us up from the airport. So far so good! We went to our hotel to check in and then it was off for supper. A rather nice gesture on the part of the tour agency considering that it was really late and they had no obligations to bring us for supper so late in the night. Supper was roasted lamb sticks with other roasted stuff. What else?

Night 1’s hotel: 天元大酒店 was the best. It was actually quite luxurious. Unfortunately, we were only staying there for only a couple of hours, before we packed and left. (We stay at different places every single night. Kind of like adapting to the nomadic lifestyle of the Mongolians, hahaha!)
