Cambodia (16 – 26 May 2006): Day 4

Phnom Penh
Arrived at the Aspara Square in PP and were bombarded with tuk tuk and moto drivers. There were hordes of them pestering us to take their tuk tuks or moto to the guest houses that they were recommending. Gosh! All I wanted to do was figure out where we were, but to no avail. In the end, grabbed on of the tuk tuk driver who had been ‘sticking’ on to me from the start and asked him to get us to the Central Market as we wanted to get bus tickets to go to Sihanoukille. Tickets cost US$4 and we made it in time for the last bus that left that day at 1.45 pm.

Sihanoukville

Arrived near 7 pm and it was getting dark. Got moto drivers to drive us to Cloud 9, which we had singled out as our destination guesthouse, but they brought us instead to another beach on Serendipity beach. Instead, the driver drove us to Occheuteal Beach which was further down to a guesthouse called the Markara. That was beach front for them. In fact that place looked so far from the beach. After insisting to be sent to cloud 9, they reluctantly brought us there. It was a dark and winding road and for a minute I had 2nd thought, but the place was indeed quite nice and quiet. Quite a nice bungalow that overlooked the sea. For the driver, I guessed they lost out on their premium comission with the Markara which would have given them US$1 a day for the entire period we stayed with them. Cloud 9 probably only gave them a 1 time comission. It was late, but we went to walk along the beach in search of food. Found a place near the beach front with cushion seat, candles and quite near the “main road”. The Naphouse. Meal there was nice.

Made it back to Cloud 9 before it began pouring.
