Shopping in Cambodia
Central Market and Russian Market was about the only few places that had stuff that were value for money to buy. I did not get much, cos’ seriously, after China, I still felt that nothing wowed me nor was cheap enough to make me splurge. Which, of course, is a good thing!
BBQ Sotong! Delicious!!!
At this point, I shall relate a very interesting account. With intention of heading to a bar called Maxime across te Ton Le Sap, we hopped onto motos and drove over with no clue as to where we were going. Little did we know that the moto drivers too were clueless as to where we wanted to go. Ended up asking some passer by and was told to go in a general direction. Found this long stretch of road with alot of HUGE restaurants that I equate were similar to our East Coast Park Restaurant, but on a much much larger scale. Picked the one with the most cars and entered. Think they had some kind of function going on. This place was a typical business man bring client place. Could tell as there were really no foreignors there. That was an experience. The food wasn’t all that bad and the cost wasn’t all that EX. So, decent meal for us and the mosquitoes (they really had a feast on me, i think!)
Wanting to go back after the meal, we went to the main road, with full expectations that there would not be tuk tuks or motos waiting there as this was too much a local place. Fortunately (or unfortunately) a moto came by. However, that guy could not speak english and we could not tell him where we wanted to go and he could not tell us how much it costs. So, we walked on. Little while later, he chased after us with another moto guy who helped to translate. We got onto the motos and went back across the river. That guy who spoke no English, I believe, was really not used to the BIG city opposite. He kept looking around at the buildings, the lights, the people and I felt all so dangerous on his moto. =( Eventually we reached our destination and even burnt my leg on the exhaust, cos’ while I was getting off he moved the moto and my leg touched the exahust. Ouch! Anyhow, the other moto guy was apparently a soccer player on the Cambodian Team which played against Singapore a couple of years back. He wasn’t a moto driver and he merely assisted the non english speaking guy to translate and transport. Whatever fees we gave him, he passed on to the guy. Nice guy!!!
My Lien – Had coffee there and sat there for a bit. Chinese owned, cosy, but not that comfortable, since there wasn’t much wind and it was hot.
We then headed down the street to Equinox, which was a bar we could not find the night before. At that place, there was this local called Sou Mey who paints and sews clothes. I believe he was given an opportunity by some Expat to siew clothes and sell them in a shop. The clothes he did was really good looking, the paintings were abstract and quite nice. The following day, while eating at Friends Restaurant, I found out that he was also from Friends. Reccommended to visit Equinox (3A Street 278 Phnom Penh).
