Cambodia (16 – 26 May 2006): Day 9

Central Market & Russian Market

Central Market

Went to shop at the Central Market and the Russian Market in the morning. Also had the “Best Iced Coffee” in Phnom Penh at the Russian Market, according to the store. It wasn’t bad!

Iced Coffee

Best Iced Coffee in Phnom Penh
The market sold loads of stuff, but at US dollar rating, I did not find much things which were unique and cheap. Hence, I did not shop very much.

Dessert Stall

Dessert Stall at the Central Market. Ther desserts are nice and cheap, try them! You have to like coconut, though!

Toul Sleng Museum & Killing Fields of Cheung Ek

Toul Sleng

Toul Sleng (US$3) – This place used to be a school which was turned into a torture centre during the
Khmer Rouge Regime. A feeling of sadness envolopes the place as you see photos after photos of the Cambodian people who had been the victim of this horrible place.

Boddhi Tree

Took a break after the visit to escape the sweltering mid day sun at the Boddhi Tree, which was strategically located directly opposite the Museum. There were alot of like minded people there.

From Toul Sleng to the Killing fields (US$3) was 15 km and the tuk tuk driver insisted on charging at least US$8 for the 2 way ride. Do bargain as they start their price at US$15.

En route to the killing fields, alot of barren land, dry and dusty.

Killing Fields

The Killing Fields has a pagoda storing all the bones that had been dug up. The area is barren and tourists can just walk around and observe the place.

Back to the city, for late lunch (or at least I did) Notice the Cambodian Rice noodles. It was good. Also in the background is the pomelo salad which is also very refreshing.

Lunch

Later on that evening, hopped into a bar – The Green Vespa – a bar owned by an American and had
some beer. Nice little bar with alot of American flavour. Late night supper was at Remdang, a classy restaurant which was similar to Friends Restaurant. They hire and train young Cambodians who would otherwise be left out on the streets to become chefs and waiters/waitress. The food was good. They even had Tarantulas on their menu, but did not have them stocked. (hehehe)

Remdang

The Spring roll had yam wrapped in it and it was delicious!!! Try also the bread with mushroom dip.

Ondeh Ondeh Han Zi Soup

The “Ondeh Ondeh” and “Han Zi Soup” taste alike desserts.
